今回のSMCはYamazakiが報告します。 K. Narisawaさん、Y. Narisawaさん、Hirabayashiさん、Kanekoさん、Yamazakiの５名の参加でした。 ConductorはYamazaki, LecturerはN. Narisawaさんでした。

今回のConductorでした

いつもどおりPresident のK. NarisawaさんのOpening remarksで開始です。中で使われていた”just the weather”, “contagious”が参考になると思いました。

例文を拾うとIt is just the weather for an excursion―an ideal weather for an excursion.　また、“contagious”も”His enthusiasm was contagious.” 病気が感染する以外に比喩的表現(figurative language)としても使われていることを知りました。

◆ Lecture

Word Gameでした。単語の定義が用意されて、その単語を答えるというものです。

・ a light folding chair on wheels that you push small children in: buggy

・ It is a large stone building with four walls that slope to a point at the top, especially in Egypt and Central America. It was built as a tomb as king. : pyramid

逆に単語から定義がどこまで表現できるかと思いました。特にポイントを赤字で示しました。

◆ Table Topic Speech

インターネットから拾った質問集からピックアップしました。

・ If you could be any age for one week, what age and why ? Kanekoさんは、大学入試合格した直後のハッピーな年代に戻りたいとのスピーチでした。

・ If you could travel fly in a hot-air balloon over any city in the world, what city would you choose ? Hirabayashiさんはカナダの街をイメージされたスピーチでした。

◆ Prepared Speech

・ “Baseball” (N. Narisawaさん)

子供の頃の空き地(vacant lot)を利用した野球のお話。バット、ボールも今のように市販のものがない時代、何かの流用、手作り、ルールさえも子供に合ったように勝手に変えて遊んだ時代のお話でした。結びでの表現のGone are the days when kids improvise things when they don’t have enough. がポイントでした。さらに今後使ってみたい表現を拾うと、”Soccer paled in comparison to baseball.” “get the ball to fly over the fence”などです。

・ US secretary of state makes historic visit to Hiroshima (Hirabayashiさん)

ケリー米国務長官の広島訪問の記事の引用でした。ケリー氏の”gut-wrenching display”というコメントや guest bookに記載したという“Everyone in the world should see and feel the power of this memorial”も印象に残りました。個人的にはオバマ大統領の広島訪問につながって欲しいと思いました。また、今なお60%のアメリカ人は原爆投下を是とする世論、”apologize”の問題についてもメンバーで議論がありました。

・ Resident’s Association (Kanekoさん)

今年度自治会の役員をすることになって、その苦労話でした。K. Narisawaさんも自治会役員とかで、経験者としての意見の交換がありました。

◆ お知らせ

４月１７日(日)に小山公民館利用者懇談会総会に出席しました。その中で今年度役員、事業計画決めがありました。清掃を１回/年➡２回/年（９月、１２月）とすることが変更になりました。９月(草取り)に呼び出しがあるかもしれません。(９月に出れば、１２月は免除)ご協力を願うかもしれません。よろしくお願いします。
